John is also passionate about helping those who have been diagnosed with mental health / genetic “disorders”. This started with him being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2009. He wrote a book: No Matter the Chaos: An Attorney’s Pursuit for Order and How it May Help those Living with Bipolar “Disorder”, a few years ago summarizing his experiences since being diagnosed with the mental health condition, in an effort to help those who have been similarly diagnosed. In the book, he discusses how medications, mental health professionals, family, and God can all be relied upon to help one lead a constructive life in the midst of receiving a diagnosis. More recently, he wrote an article: How to Bring God into Mental Health Conversations, in which he advocated for a reform to the way mental health professionals diagnose their patients. The article does not advocate for self-diagnosis, but it does advocate for a more truthful characterization of overall mental health “conditions”, which, yes, include “disorders”, but also include gifts. John clarifies that these conditions are unique aspects of the human condition, and that at present, those diagnosed with down syndrome, ADHD, autism spectrum-disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, and others, are all being misdiagnosed, with the consequence being that victimhood dominates in very dangerous fashions in the mental health community. John is trying to change that.
