Mental Health Reform

John is also passionate about helping those who have been diagnosed with mental health / genetic “disorders”. A few years ago, he wrote a book about his experiences since being diagnosed with Bipolar “Disorder” in 2009, in an effort to help those who have been diagnosed. One of the themes in the book is the characterization of the Bipolar mental state as being a Bipolar Condition, and not a Bipolar “Disorder”. Recently, John wrote an article which more formally proposed a reform to the way mental health professionals diagnose all mental health conditions, namely so that conditions are diagnosed instead of “disorders”. The difference is that conditions include both “disorders” and associated gifts (e.g., it’s not a coincidence that those who have the same mental health “disorders” also have the same gifts). The article is written from a Christian lens, as John’s Christian faith has shaped how he understands mental health conditions. Even more recently, John wrote a short summary of his understanding of the manic side of the Bipolar Condition. He wrote it so that those affected will protect those they love by knowing when to pull back, instead of harming them by going too far. That way, they will be honored for what they are experiencing, just like others are honored for exercising their gifts.
